Digital Operations – What Does That Entail?

Share post via

There they were, the questioning looks: "What exactly do you do at Digital Operations?" A question we hear quite often—and one we don't leave unanswered.

But let's take a quick look back at the past and examine the origin of the term more closely.

Where does the topic of digital operations come from?

The origin probably lies in operations management, as operations managers have been helping to design, control, and improve (production) processes for many years. The goal has always been to fulfill business operations and customer requirements efficiently, using as few resources as possible. With the dawn of the digital age, numerous opportunities arose to make business operations more efficient through digital operations.

But what exactly does digital operations mean?

In many companies, digital operations is the department that deals with digitalization. Digitalization strategies are developed, optimization potential is identified, and digitalization projects are implemented in order to exploit the advantages of new technologies and achieve long-term success. From the actual business to the customer journey to the administration of the company—digital operations managers take a 360° view of the entire company. This allows them to identify all areas where digital services can bring improvements, for example:
  • Document receipt: Smart, automated input management with scanning solutions, automatic text recognition (OCR), and machine learning offers many advantages here.
  • Processes: Business process management systems, among other things, offer support here, enabling workflows, processes, and procedures to be simplified, digitized, and automated.
  • Collaboration: Digital services help make communication, interaction, and content distribution more efficient, both internally and externally.
  • Cloud: Numerous scalable and reliable services can make a company more flexible, agile, and innovative.
