Digital skills = technology skills?

Digital competence - you never stop learning...

Let's get straight to the point: anyone who believes that digital skills only describe technical knowledge of technologies is very much mistaken!

The fact is, the reality of our lives and work is becoming increasingly digital. What was once looked up in the Brockhaus can now be googled in a matter of seconds. A smartwatch knows more about a person's state of health than their family doctor. And it's no different in the corporate and working world - the buzzwords are:

#Work4.0
#Industry4.0
#IoT
#DigitalTransformation

And yes, the level of digitalization in German companies still has a lot of room for improvement.

But why do we need digital skills?

The ability to use a smartphone or communicate via WhatsApp is a far cry from what is actually meant by digital literacy.

The term is very complex and, in short, means finding your way in the digital world and actively helping to shape it. So if you don't want to lose touch, you have to live digitalization!

... and this also applies to companies!

After all, a high level of digital competence is an important prerequisite for a company's success these days. Data and information are important economic factors that need to be managed.

New digital technologies harbor both opportunities and risks for companies

Technology expertise is certainly an important skill in the corporate world. Ultimately, it is about using new technologies in a targeted and profitable way. To this end, it is essential for companies to familiarize themselves with relevant technologies such as cloud computing, big data technologies, AI, business process automation, etc. and to carry out an analysis or evaluation with regard to their own business model.

A fundamental asset for the future: digital competence management

Figure 1: Key features of digital competence management

As Figure 1 "Key features of digital competence management" shows, digital skills are made up of many different elements.

The magic word here is "customer experience" - the (digital) customer is at the center of corporate commerce - always and everywhere!

Data is valuable information that is used for corporate management and control.

The innovation potential of new technologies must be recognized and used in a targeted, value-adding manner. It also determines the actual ability to innovate.

Innovations must be promoted, approved and ultimately realized.

Agility is the be-all and end-all in product and project development. Collaboration, both internally and externally, is supported by digital possibilities.

Companies need to find the right talent on the market and promote or expand the digital skills in the existing workforce, although these need to be differentiated according to role and task.

Combined with the characteristics shown in Figure 1, digital change can only succeed within the framework of professional digital competence management.
