Digitalization, automation, artificial intelligence, and robotics. How will all of this affect the world of work? What should we be doing today?
Cornelia Daheim and Ole Wintermannaddressedthese questions back in 2016 in their report for the Bertelsmann Foundationentitled "2050: The Future of Work – Results of an International Delphi Study by the Millennium Project."In order to keep pace with rapid technological progress, we need to adapt to new working realities. However, we are facing a journey into a completely different system of working, which we cannot yet predict with any certainty – but we can help shape it.
"Digitalization and technological change have already fundamentally changed the way we work, and the signs are visible everywhere. This type of change will also shape the transformation phase—in an accelerated form." ( Daheim and Wintermann 2016, p. 14)
What can be done today to master the transition?
The experts involved in the study believe that large systems are slow to respond to change and will not actively shape it. The strength therefore lies with the individual. Individuals can and should start now to shape the new world of work before major political movements can be implemented.
"The hope is that many individuals will be able to bring about changes to the systems that will make them sustainable for the future." ( Daheim and Wintermann 2016, p. 29)
However, there are still many concerned voices among individuals who cling to the old ways, are unwilling to embrace changing job profiles, tasks, and activities, and fail to see the potential of new technologies. This can slow down the development of organizations and put them at risk of not being able to cope with changing environments in the future. This is where Change managementWhat does change management mean? Change management encompasses all... More help.
What makes change management so relevant for the future of work
Change management encompasses all measures, tasks, and activities that lead to comprehensive, sustainable change processes in organizations. These change processes are essential for creating a culture of change within a company and dismantling old structures. This allows the organization and all its employees to adapt to the new world of work and leverage its potential. Change management helps to eliminate resistance and uncertainty among individuals, motivating them to help shape the future of work and not shy away from change. This creates the ability to adapt to new working realities, keep pace with rapid technological progress, and help shape the digital transformation and thus the future.
