Case Management Model and Notation (CMMN)

What does CMMN mean?
CMMN is the abbreviation for Case Management Model and Notation. It is used for the graphical representation of processes within the framework of case management and can be seamlessly integrated into other notations. As a relatively new standard from 2014, it can be seen as a supplement to BPMN for flexible workflows, for example, and enables the representation of highly variable, knowledge-intensive, and unpredictable processes. If, for example, the sequence of a process flow can vary from case to case and a knowledge worker should be able to influence the flow for an efficient process, CMMN offers the possibility to model such flexible processes in a clear and understandable way. The ability to map flexible processes is more difficult with BPMN and can only be achieved through workarounds, which become too confusing in very complex scenarios.

In many cases, it makes sense to combine BPMN and CMMN in order to map the structured parts of the process with BPMN and the unstructured, variable parts of the process with CMMN. The current version of CMMN is supported by Camunda, for example.
