What Does OCR Mean?
OCR is an acronym for the English term “optical character recognition” and is translated in German as optical character recognition or text recognition. The term OCR originates from information technology and is used for the automated text recognition in digital images .
When documents – such as invoices – are provided digitally via specific input devices (e.g., mobile phone photos, scanners), they exist only as raster graphics. OCR analyzes these raster graphics and can automatically recognize letters, characters, and numbers, distinguishing text blocks from graphics within the document. The recognized text is verified and corrected to minimize errors. This can be achieved through dictionaries or context analysis. Consequently, the text components within documents can be made available for processing, which, for instance, enables the automated assignment of scanned invoices in accounts payable management. Full-text search in document management systems is also facilitated by OCR. Furthermore, OCR software is an essential component in input management and can, in this context, simplify the processing of PDF invoices, for example.
Advantages of OCR
For businesses and their operational documents, intelligent text recognition offers numerous benefits:
- Reduced effort through automated text recognition in all digital documents (PDF files, scans, images, faxes, etc.)
- OCR enables the automated assignment of scanned documents, images, etc.
- OCR enables the searching of PDF documents, images, etc.
- Time savings, as tedious manual retyping is no longer required, for example.
- Cost savings, as the manual effort involved in handling digitized documents is significantly reduced.
- Direct processing of digital documents through automated capture of printed/written texts
We are pleased to support you in this area with our comprehensive expertise. Our proprietary ISR solution or IBM Datacap can help you quickly and cost-effectively capture, recognize, and automatically classify large volumes of documents – without requiring manual intervention.
