IBM is discontinuing support for Planning Analytics version 2.0.9.x – Find out everything you need to know about the technical challenges, how much time you have left, and the opportunities that the switch brings in our expert interview!

With the end of support for IBM Planning Analytics version 2.0.9.x approaching and the associated need to migrate to the newer version 2.1.x, companies are facing important decisions. In conversation with Tim Kunert, Head of Application Management BI at ISR, we discuss the key aspects of this transition and the new information from IBM regarding the adjusted EOS date. He provides valuable insights into how users can prepare for the upcoming changes. This involves not only the technical requirements, but also the migration from older client modules such as Architect and Perspectives to the modern tools Planning Analytics for Excel (PAfE) and Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW).

Tim, do you have more detailed information about the announced end of support for IBM Planning Analytics 2.0.9.x?

Tim: Yes, IBM originally announced the end of support for IBM Planning Analytics version 2.0.9.x for April 30, 2025. This has now been postponed by IBM to October 30, 2025 . From this date onwards, there will be no further support for this version. IBM strongly recommends upgrading to version 2.1.x in order to continue receiving support and updates. As of today, version 2.1.x will be supported by IBM until April 2027.

What should be considered with this upgrade?

Tim: As part of this upgrade, some previous components, such as Architect and Perspectives, will no longer be included in Planning Analytics 2.1. Instead, the main components will be Planning Analytics Workspace, Planning Analytics for Excel, PA Spreadsheet Services (TM1Web), and the PA Engine. TM1 Perspectives, which is still supported in the current version, will receive an important new feature:

TM1 Perspectives will now also support Microsoft Excel 2021 (local installation on Windows). Previously, only Excel 2016 and 2019 were compatible, with Microsoft ending support for these versions on October 14, 2025. This new feature facilitates the transition from Planning Analytics 2.0.9.x to 2.1.x, as companies can switch to a more modern version of Excel.

Furthermore, Planning Analytics 2.1 is no longer supported by Microsoft Server 2016. We therefore recommend upgrading to Microsoft Server 2022. To use IBM Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW), we recommend installing it on a separate server. Our recommendation is to use a Linux server (Windows would also be possible, but additional Mirantis licenses (subject to a fee) would be required). Here, too, we can provide targeted advice and work with the customer to make the right and best possible decision.

What does this mean for users of IBM Planning Analytics Perspective and Architect?

Tim: IBM is planning the following changes for these two products: IBM Planning Analytics Perspective will be replaced by IBM Planning Analytics for Excel (PAfE), and IBM Planning Analytics Architect will be replaced by IBM Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW).

What are the benefits of Planning Analytics for Excel (PAfE)?

Tim: Planning Analytics for Excel (PAfE) offers several advantages over older tools because it is officially supported for Office 365, enabling seamless integration into the latest Office suite. In addition, PAfE also runs on the 32-bit version of Excel, providing flexibility for different system requirements. Installation with administrative rights for PAfE is no longer necessary and can be deployed in a few simple steps. Automation is possible and can be carried out for our customers as part of our Application Management Services operations management. This means that there is comprehensive support from IBM and, on the IT operations side, continuous support from ISR from implementation to maintenance.

What about IBM Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW)?

Tim: PAW also offers advantages and improvements. Before deploying PAW, you must first check whether the necessary licenses are already included in the TM1 portfolio. If not, they can be purchased via ISR. From a technical perspective, PAW should be installed on separate servers. Each stage (DEV, QA/ACC, PROD) receives its own PAW server, which has the advantage of keeping the stages separate from each other, thus ensuring better management and security.

PAW is containerized on a Docker basis, which enables flexible and efficient deployment on various operating systems, whether on a Windows server or a Unix server. We can take care of the administrative side of server operation, ensuring smooth integration and maintenance. We understand the challenges of new technologies and are happy to relieve our customers of the technical complexities—with our many years of experience and direct connection to IBM, we ensure uncomplicated and reliable operation.

What should companies consider when migrating?

Tim: Although IBM has granted another "deferral" until October 2025, the migration should be planned and carried out in a timely manner. In advance, it should be actively checked whether and how many Perspective Reports and TI processes need to be migrated. The migration and adaptation of action buttons and similar functions is particularly important. In addition, end users must be trained accordingly to make the transition as smooth as possible. Customers and the business (departments) must be involved at an early stage so that they can learn how to use the new tools and take advantage of their added value. This is particularly important with regard to PAfE, as its operation and technology already differ from the old Perspective.

How can we at ISR provide support?

Tim: Thanks to our targeted and concentrated expertise from a single source, we at ISR can support you at any time in the areas of support, operation, and licensing. Especially with regard to updates and upgrades of IBM Planning Analytics and IBM Cognos Analytics, we can provide you with targeted technical support based on valuable experience from previous projects and carry out the regulated operation for you during and after the update.
