IBM FileNet: DevOps in an ECM Environment

Our ISR ECM DevOps in the IBM FileNet Content Manager environment: How software development and operations work together perfectly

Big Blue swallows Little Blue! There was a huge uproar in the industry when IBM bought the pioneer FileNet in 2006. But what has become of it?

Satisfied customers and stable systems as archive, document management, or workflow solutions. Some of our customers have probably spent half their professional lives with this product. But more and more of these experts are leaving companies because, for example, retirement beckons or other circumstances result in a loss of expertise for the company.

From our daily work in the IBM FileNet environment, whether in project development or in the operational environment, we can say that IBM FileNet expertise in companies is increasingly dwindling due to a lack of skilled personnel. At the same time, however, the need for precisely this knowledge is existential. After all, a replacement or even a sell-off of IBM FileNet (as once proclaimed) is still a long way off!

Oldie but goldie – IBM FileNet remains the leading ECM solution in large companies

Thanks to globalization and increasing digitalization, our world is not only spinning faster, but also becoming more complex. In recent years, many new technologies and trends have emerged that have become indispensable in business and private life. However, IBM FileNet remains a robust and solid system for document storage and continues to be the heart of IT for many companies.

Why? Because it stores a lot of important data and information, some of which goes back decades. IBM FileNet meets all requirements for document storage and will continue to do so in the future. Due to the high strategic importance and reliable and solid performance of the system, we say: "never change a running system." That is why it is necessary to have a high level of expertise in the IBM FileNet system in order to expand the application portfolio and ensure reliable operation of the system.

ISR as an IBM FileNet partner – a partnership that never expires!

We have been a permanent strategic partner of IBM since 1995. Our partnership is therefore almost as "old" as our company's history itself. We are a reliable and competent partner for our customers. We have over 35 IBM FileNet experts with years of experience and expertise at our disposal. We therefore serve the entire DevOps cycle (DevOps = Development and Operations) (see Figure 1).

Operation and application development in IBM FileNet go hand in hand at our company.

This is how we deliver in the BUSINESS PROCESS AUTOMATION business unit, we develop and implement related solutions in the areas of document, case, and input management in the context of IBM ECM. This means that in the DevOps cycle, this business unit takes on project tasks from design to rollout (see Figure 1, left, Project).

In addition to capturing content and documents, our service area focuses on the development of DMS —document and data management systems or archiving systems—which essentially perform the following functions:

Over the past 28 years, we have successfully replaced or introduced DMS systems at customer sites on multiple occasions using IBM technologies. In addition to designing, providing, and developing customized software, we also handle data migration from legacy systems, employee training and workshops, and testing as a matter of course.

...for the continuous improvement of IBM FileNet operations

Our business area APPLICATION MANAGEMENT takes care of the operation of the IBM FileNet system. Our customers are assigned a dedicated contact person and can create tickets in our service desk. Our experts respond to reported incidents in accordance with the agreed service level agreements (SLAs). Through monitoring, our experts identify and resolve problems before they occur. The agreed services for operating the IBM FileNet system are tailored to the customer's needs. Starting with the rollout, the Application Management division is responsible for the continuous improvement of operations (see Figure 1, right, Operations).
