Digital Competencies = Technological Competence?

Digital Competence – Lifelong Learning…

To be clear from the outset: anyone who believes that digital competencies merely describe technical knowledge of technologies is profoundly mistaken!

The fact is, our living and working realities are becoming increasingly digital. What was once looked up in an encyclopedia is now Googled within seconds. A smartwatch often provides more insight into a person's health status than their general practitioner. The corporate and professional world is no different – the buzzwords are:

#Work4.0
#Industry4.0
#IoT
#DigitalTransformation

And yes, the level of digitalization in German companies still has significant room for improvement.

But why are Digital Competencies essential?

The ability to operate a smartphone or communicate via WhatsApp is far from adequately describing what is truly meant by digital competence.

The term is highly multifaceted and, in essence, refers to the ability to navigate the digital world and actively contribute to its shaping. Therefore, anyone who wishes to remain relevant must fully embrace digitalization!

… and this also holds true for enterprises!

Indeed, a high level of digital competence is now a critical prerequisite for corporate success. Data and information represent crucial economic factors that must be effectively managed.

New Digital Technologies Present Both Opportunities and Risks for Enterprises

Undoubtedly, technological competence is a vital capability within the corporate landscape. Ultimately, it involves deploying new technologies in a goal-oriented and profitable manner. To achieve this, it is imperative for enterprises to engage with relevant technologies such as Cloud Computing, Big Data Technologies, AI, Business Process Automation, and so forth, and to conduct a thorough analysis and evaluation concerning their own business model.

Figure 1: Key Characteristics of Digital Competence Management

As Figure 1, 'Key Characteristics of Digital Competence Management,' illustrates, digital competencies are composed of numerous elements.

The pivotal concept here is 'Customer Experience' – the (digital) customer is central to all business activities, at all times and in all places!

Data represents valuable information that serves corporate management and governance.

The innovation potential of new technologies must be identified and leveraged in a targeted, value-adding manner. Furthermore, it is a prerequisite for genuine innovation capability.

Innovations must be fostered, approved, and ultimately realized.

Agility is paramount in product and project development. Collaboration, both internal and external, is facilitated by digital capabilities.

Companies must identify and acquire the appropriate talent in the market, while simultaneously fostering and expanding digital competencies within their existing workforce, differentiating these skills according to specific roles and tasks.

In conjunction with the characteristics presented in Figure 1, digital transformation can only succeed through professional Digital Competence Management.
