2018, 2019, and now, 2022, again. For the third time, one of our trainees has been honored by the Braunschweig Chamber of Industry and Commerce for "outstanding achievements." Jonathan and Felix told us how our future IT specialists rate their career path, the theoretical part of their training at vocational school, and the practical part at our company. Malte, a long-time trainer who himself started as a trainee at ISR many years ago, explains how training works at our company and what role the company plays in their success.
If you don't like reading, you can watch the video here to find out how Jonathan and Malte reflect on their training at ISR. The text below includes the opinions of other trainees as well as information from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and our recruiting team.
Enjoy reading and watching.
What is the IHK award all about?
Every year, the Braunschweig Chamber of Industry and Commerce honors trainees who have completed their exams with excellent results. A celebration is held together with the particularly successful examinees and representatives of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the training companies, and the vocational schools.
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the celebrations were able to take place live again on October 7, 2022. This year, 132 trainees were honored at the Millenium Event Center in Braunschweig for achieving at least 91 points in their final thesis, placing them among the top 5% (of 2,650 trainees). ISR was there for the third time.
Jonathan explains exactly how the award ceremony went in the video.

What do you learn during training?
The tasks of IT specialists are incredibly varied. They range from requirements analysis to the setup, maintenance, and administration of systems to the development of applications and databases. Trainee IT specialists for system integration and application development also take on the customization, procurement, and installation of hardware and software, as well as tasks in the areas of consulting, training, and IT security.
Further information about training at ISR and the specific differences between the various fields of study can also be found in this article:
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SYSTEM INTEGRATION AND APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT?
In both fields, trainees deal with databases, object-oriented software development, and systems engineering. They also acquire comprehensive knowledge and skills in business administration, project managementWhat is project management? Project management encompasses all – often standardized – tasks... More and communication are also included.
In the application development specialization, prospective software developers focus on the adaptation, maintenance, and, of course, development of software and databases. Programming languages and development tools, software engineering methods, and user training are part of the curriculum.
The IT specialist for system integration training program focuses on networks, operating systems, IT security, and computer network technologies, which are planned, installed, maintained, and administered by the trainees.
In the video interview, Jonathan explains that he chose system integration because he didn't want to work with code all the time.
What do you learn during vocational school training and what do you learn during the practical part at ISR?
As a "sys admin," Jonathan recalls Jonathan recalls in an interview that he learned in theory at vocational school how to set up networks, taking data security and data protection into account. He was also able to apply this knowledge in practice at ISR.
As Malte explains in the video, trainees in their first year of training first learn about the wide range of support requests that come into our internal IT department (IT Operations) through their work in first-level support.
In the second year of training, the focus is on the systems that the trainees enjoy and are particularly interested in. The trainees then take on initial responsibility for precisely these systems.
In the final year of training as an IT specialist for system integration, trainees are alreadygiven full responsibility for their chosen system, from administration, including updates and operation(e.g., patching), to operational safety.
How does ISR support its trainees during their training?
At ISR, we take into account what trainees particularly enjoy and which topics they are particularly interested in. Trainees can then specialize in these areas and receive support in doing so. As Malte explains in the interview, our trainees are treated and valued just like our permanent employees.
When preparing for exams, our trainees are given sufficient time during working hours to prepare. And, of course, their experienced colleagues also provide assistance and are available as contact persons.
Of course, awards such as those from the Chamber of Industry and Commerce are primarily the achievement of the trainees themselves, but ISR strives every day to create a working environment that promotes successful completion of training.
What happens to the trainees after their training?
Many of our trainees remain with us as colleagues. Some stay in the department where they were trained, while others move to other divisions and business areas. As a rule, increased mentoring, growing practical experience in customer projects, and further training at the ISR Academy lead to deeper specialization.
